Referral Support Service
Referrals
A doctor may recommend that you are referred to a specialist for further investigation or treatment. Where this is the case, our administration team will send a letter requesting a referral to the Vale of York Referral Support Service (RSS).
Your case is then assessed by a specialist at the RSS who will decide what the next steps should be in your assessment or treatment. This should ensure you are seen at the best place at the right time. They will contact you to arrange an appointment within two days of their receiving the letter from your doctor. If the specialist refers you back to the doctor for further tests then we will contact you to arrange these.
If your referral is classified as urgent you should expect to have an appointment within two weeks of referral by the GP.
If you have received a letter or phone call from the RSS to arrange an appointment you should contact them directly to discuss it.
We are responsible for ensuring that where a referral is requested it is processed and passed to the RSS in a timely manner and prioritised according to clinical need. Once the referral is with the RSS we are unable to expedite it.
If you are concerned that you have not heard from the Referral Support Service 14 days after your initial appointment with the doctor please contact us. For urgent referrals this should be seven days.
